The Deaton and Carpet One Story Back in 1974, Gary and Marilyn Deaton found a vacant abandoned lumber shed at 527 E. College and rented it for 30 days; mainly because Gary had purchased 21 carpet remnants for $425.00 in an effort to survive. Gary and Marilyn had been in real estate but with a deep recession, the money had dried up… meaning no business. Gary and Marilyn had the desire to turn that old abandoned shed into a carpet store, and by taking one step at a time, they developed one of the most respected businesses in West Tennessee. In 1985 with 41 other retailers across the country, Carpet One was born. And, in 2005 Carpet One is the largest floor covering retailer in the world- a long way from 527 E. College. Deaton’s Carpet One has given a new meaning to customer service; always willing to stand behind their work. Thus, creating the customer confidence that they have today- No one does it better than Deaton’s Carpet One.
